Groovin’ at the Producers Conference Part 1

What a weekend it was, here in Toronto, as the city embraced a day of Beat Production festivities including the Sound Supremacy Battle of the Beatmakers, a short Are Your Beats In The Streets segment with Intelx, and the very informative Propellerheads Producers Conference hosted by Music Marketing. (A big thank you goes out to Shawn Dalton of Music Marketing for exclusive Wallholder.com coverage of this event).

This year, the event featured legendary hip hop producer, Marley Marl, who showcased his new beats produced in Reason 4, as well as an exclusive instant club hit with LL Cool J.

The boombap king was then given drumsitcks (used at the event) by the most sampled drummer in the world, the funky drummer himself, Clyde Stubblefield, who gave the on-lookers an insight into his start as a drum player, when he started out drumming on cardboard boxes in the house.

He would also go into how he and band members would be fined a couple hundred dollars by the Godfather of Soul himself, for missing a hit or note while playing.

Insecting drum grooves via large projected waveforms (on the Drake Hotel walls) Music Marketing’s Ray Williams gets deep into the anatomy of a groove looking closely at such tracks as the “Funky Drummer” and “Superstition”.

Following the groove lesson was an informative workshop-like session with Beat-Queen Stoni, who connected her MPC to Reason demonstrating how to use the MPC as a controller and triggering device for ReDrum and Dr.REX within the Reason sequencer. She also touched on the possibilities of ReGroovin’ as she as also demonstrates on this video over on YouTube.

Hosted by TV and Radio personality Mike Williams, the event was filled with questions, laughs, history and an overall warm feel for the future of Digital Beat Production.
